Over the weekend I was doing my paper on different companies distributing apple sauce to us, the consumer. I first started with the comparison of the ingredients of each.

Mott’s apple sauce ingredients contain, apples , water, high frutose corn syrup, ascorbic acid for coloring. Musselman’s apple sauce ingredients contain, apples, water, high frutose corn syrup, and corn syrup and ascorbic acid.

Both of those products contained the high frutose corn syrup ,that I as a consumer, need to avoid with my past health issues. I went into the internet and looked up highfrutosecornsyrup and in that website I found that any human being is in danger to consume any high frutose corn syrup, for it has become over-used by companies.

Being cheaper to produce, it’s sweet, easy to store and cheaper to use than pure cane sugar. So the industries use high frutose corn syrup in everything we consume. Making us sick, overweight, and we are now addicted to the sweetness and the sodium also added to their products.

On th website www.motts.com, there is no written warning of their product being unhealthy and if anything they say their products are heqalthy and we should have a least two servings of their products. I could even sign up and become a member, free, and get all of their advertisements through my e-mail.

I went to www.musselmans.com and found almost the same thing. Sign up for a free membership, get coupons, give us your e-mail, I believe the internet just became another way to reach consumers instead of giving the whole truth about their products, they just want to make the big buck.

So as a consumer I believe we all have to take the time to read all the labels on our cans and jars of food we buy from the grocery. Consumers be aware of what you are feeding your family, eat healthy and enjoy!

I t was a long week off from college but the beginning of the week was nice. The skies were sunny, and I was full of energy getting ready for our produce trees to be trimmed. My husband, Todd and I enjoyed Sunday afternoon together we really didin’t do much of anything, except attend Church. And later that afternoon we played in the yard with our dogs, Cocoa, a minature Poodle , Shadow, my baby Pit Bull, and Jack our Jack Russel. They’re all high energy dogs and they love to run and catch balls in our back yard. We had a small bar-b-que that evening, chicken on the grill and potato salad. Yummy was that ever delicious and we had chocolate creme pie for dessert.

The next day ,Todd decided to work on his new van he bought a few weeks earlier . So the dogs and I spent the afternoon alone and I decided to start with the homework assignments given to me and re-do some of the past assignments. I spent about nine hours that day just to get a few of my assignments caught up to snuff. I hate to have late assignments I feel I get over stress when I let anything fall behind. Feeling I accomplished something, I decided to have dinner by myself. I prepared a chicken sandwich from the night before.

Later that evening, Todd came home petty spirited, not walking to straight,a nd slurring a little, I had him sit in the living room while I prepared him dinner. Once he ate, he became groggy and I just let him sit in his chair until he fell asleep. About an hour later, I was ready for bed, so I woke up Todd and we hit the sack.

The next morning I had a doctor appointment to do and ultasound on my heart to see if surgery was possible, when the doctor noticed I had a tumor on my kidney. I was quite shaken by the news, not having Todd there with me that afternoon, I sat and calmed myself before I took the drive home.

Feeling sorry for myself, at first, then I said to myself, gosh Connie, I’ll be just fine. I fought battles with my health issues in the past and things seemed to work out fine before. Just pray for the day when I have to do the biopsy on the tumor and it comes out to be benign. Just think positive and usually God hears my prayers and strength through him helps me feel his love.

The rest of the week went by slowly, I completed my homework assignments before the weekend came along. I enjyed the rest of the weekend by myself, helping my mother-in-law with her chores and was hoping for the weekend to get over. I sure did miss attending College, it helps me keep my mind busy. I live to go to College to learn more, of not only different classes but about myself.

I would like to get right to the point about going green. It’s just not buying green products on the shelves on our grocery stores. It’s having to do with reusing or having repurpose something that doesn’t reduce itself well into the enviroment. I see people putting televisions, stereos, computers, batteries, and furniture on the side of the curb at the end of their driveways, not caring where the product goes and how is will be disposed of properly.

Our landfills are overflowing and they are expanding largely in Midland County, it is so overfilled they have been tearing houses that the Midland County used to rent out, to provide for more expansion of the recycle center. I rented a house on Wheeler Road not even five years ago and now that house and the house that sat next to it have both been torn down to make room for more trash.

I have made a point to take a step up and control of my misuse of products I have thrown into the trash without even thinking twice if the product had a second purpose, instead of ending up in the landfills. I have decided to make a worm compost, can all the fruits and vegetables from my garden, reuse, reduce, and recyle, the planet is a beautiful place, I promise to take better care of it.

The issues I really seem to care the most about is the health of myself and other consumers that go to restraunts and don’t really know what we are eating. After watching the video of Food, Inc., I had a rude awaking about how the government and large industries have been chemically inducing the foods that we eat. It doesn’t matter is they’re a Republican or Democrat, it’s all about making the big money and then taxing us on their big profits, not concerning out our health.

The government and large industries had been adding chemicals to the feed they give to the pigs, beef cattle, chickens, and fish they sell to us, the consumers, not caring if the food is healthy for us, only if they can produce the food quick enough and it looks and tastes the same.

Consumers now having some light shed on the subject when people were getting contaminated by the foods sold to consumers, and dying. After a few people get sick / someone dies or makes a complaint, the the issues become open to the public and the news media gets the word out. The food finally gets recalled, unfortuantally for some, it was too late. I shed a tear for the families that have lost a loved one or has suffered sickness .

So as a consumer, I begin to read the labels on a lot of products on the supermarkets shelves, protecting my family from harm, or endangering their lives. I grow my own vegetables and fruit, and will be canning all my produce I’v grown without any chemicals added. This the way God intended us to live and help sustain our planet.

Iwas watching PBS with my Grandson, Colin, and Joel Greene was at a earth worm farm, getting information about the Red Wiggler Worm. Did you know that an earth worm has five hearts? Did you know that there are no male or female Red Wiggler Earth Worms? Pretty cool stuff, huh? Yes there is alot of uses for the Red Wiggler earth worm…they are used for compost piles, eating all of your grass clippings and garbage. But their also good for sport fishing, attracting wild birds, and feeding pond fish, pet turtles, snakes and even frogs…the Red Wiggler earth worm is also used for raising Trout and other fish in commercial ponds. The Red Wiggler earth worm is great for the compost pile, they eat anything from old fruits and vegetables to newspapers and old phone books,[shredded ] egg shells, coffee grounds and tea bags. And with the earth worm eating my garbage, I can save money, electricity, water, and carbon footprints in the landfills. After about three months or so I just take the Red Wiggler earth worms from the old compost and start with all over again. They multiply quickley, so the garbage feed to these Red Wiggler earth worms can take in a larger amount of garbage. Also the old compost is used to enhance the soil in my vegetable garden, making them grow bigger and tastier, nutrients are also good for my lawn and plants indoors and out, eliminating the harsh chemicals I used to purchase for my plants to grow. On the internet you can order a worm hobby kit for under forty dollars… so come on reduce, reuse, and recycle!!!

I like the commercial with the little shredded wheat guys, strawberry flavored, cinnamon flavored, and maple flavored, sitting on the edge of a cereal bowl, towels wrapped around one, with steamy hot milk, ready for them to enjoy the dip into the milk, when all of a sudden comes a brisk wind, almost knocking the little bites guys over, one grabbing the cereal bowl edge, dangling. They yell out, hey what’s happening??? A little boy replies, sorry, just trying to cool off the milk so I can ejoy my cereal. The setting is cute with the different flavored cereal having character roles, enjoying the steam from the milk, where it is kid friendly, and shows that the shredded wheat has come a long way with flavored and smaller bites and served with hot milk for a different way to sell it to the consumer.

Progresso Soup, where the character, woman, phones through a can of Progresso Soup can on a string, Ring, ring, ring, ring, to a Progresso Soup Kitchen where a Chef with a tall white Chef’s hat, answering on a Progresso Soup can hanging from a string from the ceiling. She is making a statement that since her husband started eating Progresso Light Soup, he has lost weight, like he was when they were young. The second Progresso Soup can begins to ring, Ring, rng ,ring ,ring, on trhe other can line, is the woman’s husband, stating for his wife not to worry, but to enjoy the scenery. LOL!! The old gym shorts when he was in high school sure showed how long it had been since school, they were faded and stretched out. This commercial is showind the consumer that Progesso Soups come in Light soups, and regular to satisfy the consumers needs.

As a produce farmer. there is much to do long before the produce is picked and preserved. Every late fall or winter we spend several days, sometimes weeks, depending on the amount of dead or damaged branches. Preparing the trees, trimming prunning, and spraying the branches with pestacides spray, preventing infestation from moths or worms. It is best when the trees are dormat, for trimming the branches for less sap loss and minimizes fungus and insects Pruning the trees also help the them to produce a larger amounts and product is also larger in size.

My step father, Edward E. Gingrich is a crop farmer, he has an eighty-five acre farm in Freeland where he grows corn and soy bean. He states that it is best to when working the land to rotate the crops to keep the ground fertile. He puts seeds into the ground in the Spring after tilling, and fertilizes it after planting . In the fall in October he harvestes the crop and takes it to the grainery to be dried. At the grainery the farmers sit in line with their corn in large trucks, to be dried so they can either sell or put into their silos for their livestock.

My father-in-law, David Kuch is a Livestock Farmer he has two ranches, he raises cattle, chickens, pigeons, dogs, mules, horses, donkeys and also services other farmers’ livestock. Everyday there is several chores to do, feeding and watering the livestock, cleaning their pens, gathering chicken eggs, letting the pigeons fly daily, cleaning dog kennels, checking the fences so the cattle or horses and mules don’t run off. Dave sells beef cattle to other farmers in the area that he has had for clients for several years. We put them into a trailer and take them to Pinconning to be slaughtered and packaged professionally, he couldn’t even kill a chicken if he had to, so we take them to be processed.

With the Farming and traditions carried on to other generations, we will strive the economy, social, and enviromentally.

Connie Schlink

Blogging

When I shop for produce, I always go to a Farmers Market to purchase fresh fruits or vegetables. I can trust the fruit or vegetables to be fresh and not grown indoors and with chemicals. Farmer Markets offer fresh fruits and vegetables grown in their fields and from seed to product, no chemicals to stimulate their growth or to mature quickly. Most farmers live within fifty miles from the markets, where they set up their stand and sell their fresh picked product, so I know the fruits and vegetables are as fresh as if I’d grown myself. Markets like these help farmers make a profit to sustain their farms.

I have a small produce farm in which I grow a variety of apples trees, cherry trees, and apricots trees. I also have several raspberry bushes, strawberry plants, asparagus, and grape vines that flourish and give me fresh abundance of produce. I also enjoy growing my own tomatoes, cucumbers, watermelons, pumpkins and other foods in my garden I plant every year. I do a lot of canning, so during the winter, I have fresh food straight from my own back yard. I sometimes make a profit, but most of the time I barter trade.

I have been guilty of eating at the fast food restaurants, but not like I did several years ago when I has rushing around and raising three children, in a hurry for school, work, after make time for the wholesome family meals . The food was inexpensive and covenant. But now that I’ve grown older, my heart and body rejects the fast foods. The sodium and sugars in the menus that the fast food restaurants offer, make me sick and my heart begins to race unbelievably abnormal.

Since I’ve seen the movie, Food, Inc., it makes me disgusted in the way the multi-billion dollar industries abused their workers and the livestock. With the way that they raised the cattle, chickens, pork, and the fish, with corn and chemicals is a disgrace to farmers. And the environmental issues the workers became ill, the food had been recalled because of ecoli poisoning Farmers are a few but proud and humane society, that care for their workers and livestock, and care to sell only the best to our outside clients that have been loyal customers for over forty years, and will continue to be so, we control our own destiny of sustainability.
